NO, you cannot do any type of work in H-4 status because the type of volunteer work you are talking about is not truly volunteer work in the sense of the word volunteer but actual work for which you would not be getting paid and that is still co nsidered work which is not permitted for someone in H-4 status.  if they want to have you work, why not petition for your H-1B visa?
