Under the laws of most states in this country, a spouse is liable for the medical bills of the other spouse incurred during the marriage to be paid from marital assets. From what you have written, even though you incurred medical debt during your marriage, your spouse could very well be held responsible for its payment.
I suggest that you discuss this issue further with your bankruptcy attorney.
