Is it illegal for a company to not disclose future plans before recruiting employees?

The company recruited an employee from out
of state and within 5 months of relocation, the
company was sold and employment was not
transitioned. Is it legal for the company to
actively recruit and then sell the company
leaving the new employee without a job?

It is completely legal. Employment in tihs nation is "employment at will." That means that an employee has no right to a job and may be terminated at any time (unless there is a written employment contract to the contrary); it also means that an employer is not required to disclose its future plans to employees or would-be employees, and is not required to consider the effect on employees or candidates of its planned actions.
