Although laws vary from state to state, it is unlikely that you would receive a jail sentence for theft of $25 worth of mascara. You will probably receive a fine.
You will probably also receive a letter from the store requiring you to pay an amount considerably more than the $25 value of the mascara. The letter may say that payment of the amount requested by a certain date may end the matter.
