On the first day of each month means that it is due by that date. "The check is in the mail" won't get someone where they need to be on their child support obligations. To insure timely payments, a person should mail the payments in advance of the first day of each month to avoid any contempt issues. If a payment is a day or so late, most judges are not going to raise a fuss-- because there are so many parents that make no payments at all. However, it's always best to be ahead of any issues with the judge.
