An employee can be discharged for the reason you give, or for any reason, or for no reason at all. This is because in an "at will" employment arrangemnt, a company can set the conditions of employment much as it sees fit. Accordingly, unless this release violates the term of a union/collective bargaining agreement or employment contract, or constitutes some form of legally actionable discrimination, it is legal.
