Insurance Question from Las Vegas, NV

Asked on 02/09/2013

Is there a way to continue to insure a deceased person’s vehicle while an estate is being setlled? My sister recently died in Las Vegas. I am her next of kin and took possession of her last effects from the coroner's office, including a truck and travel trailer. I contacted her auto insurance company and told the person that I spoke to that she had died and I wanted to continue insure her truck until her estate was settled. I paid for one month's coverage by credit card. I rjust eceived a mailing (addressed to my sister) from her insurance carrier stating that her insurance would be cancelled on 3/15 becaused she had died. Is there any way to cover the truck? I live in TN.

If a person who had car insurance and owned a car passes away, the insurance company insuring that car should continue to cover the car for a reasonable amount of time while the estate is settled. There is usually a clause in the auto insurance policy outlining coverage when the named insured is deceased. You should call the insurance company again and tell them the estate is still being settled. They will need driver information on whoever is using the car. In this case, it would most likely be you, since you are the heir. If you have moved the car from the original state, then the insurance will need to be rewritten to the new state. You should contact your insurance company to see if they can work with you in this matter if you have moved the car. If you have not, then the current insurance company should be willing to work with you on the insurance.
