My boss came in today and handed me a letter dated 2 days ago that states,

You have no claim here unless this action violates the terms of an employment contract or union agreement. The fact is that a company can set the conditions of the workplace much as it sees fit (absent some form of legally actionable discrimination). Accordingly, your employer can reduce wages or eliminate benefits as it deems appropriate.

It is perfectly legal, unfortunately, unless you have a written employment contract guarantying your hours. Without a contract, you are an employee at will which means, amonng other things, that the employer is 100% control over your hours, pay, and benefits.
