What legal rights do I have?

The company I work for demoted me after 4 years for not having a high school diploma or GED. Going back, I originally began employment with the company as a co-manager. The position was 50 hours a week, hourly with bonuses. Approximately 1 1/2 years later, I was asked to take a general manager position in another city. A promotion which I accepted. A few days after beginning as the GM there, the company decided they needed a copy of everyone’s diploma. Now I don’t know if I lied on the application or it was just overlooked at the time I was hired, however I had never attained one. The district manager and the regional manager told me though they had tried to get them to forego the diploma and the company decided that they would grandfather me in as a co-manager but would not allow me a GM position until I got the GED. So I went back to my original position where I continued to work for another 2 1/2 years. Then, 1 day they came to me and told me that I was being moved down to assistant manager. This position is only 40 hours per week and receives no bonus which has resulted in a significant decrease in pay.

The fact is unless this action violates the terms of an employment contract or union agreement, you have no claim here. The fact is that most work relationships is "at will". This means that a company can set the conditions of the workplace much as it sees fit (absent some form of legally actionable discrimination). Accordingly, you could have been demoted (or terminated) for any reason or no reason at all, with or without notice.
