Most employees working for private sector employers have no legal protection against discrimination on the basis of political activity (under certain circumstances public employers can be prevented from firing someone based on political speech). That having been said, a few states have laws that specifically make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of such activity. Also, some cities bar discrimination by private employers on the basis of "political orientation". Further, an employee may have protection via the terms of a union agreement or employment contract or even their own company policy. Otherwise, an "at will" employer may discipline or even terminate an employee much as it sees fit due to their political affiliation, any reason or no reason at all.
