In the probating of a person's estate there will be a petition filed by an interested person where there is no trust. If the probate has a will that designates how the decedent's assets are to be distributed and a named person to handle the estate, that person is the executor (if a male) and executrix (if a female). If there are more than two executors or executrixes named for handling the estate, they would be the co-executors or co-executrixes.

If there is not will or trust of the decedent and a petition is filed with the superior court of a given county in a certain state, the person handling the estate if a male is the administrator and if a female is the administratrix. If there is more than one person handling the administration of an estate without a will, then there will be "co-administrators" or co-administratrixes".

Good question.
