what is my course of action for the details provided below.
I am an R.N. I have worked at the same hospital for 31 years, in oncology, med/surgical and for 18 years as an assistant nurse manager in behavioral health. I am presently working as a needs assessment nurse for the past 2 1/2 years. Last week, I was given a letter by the senior HR business partner stating that my position as Needs Assessment Nurse is classified as Needs Assessment Counselor and so my pay will be reduced from $48 per hour to $34.99. If I stay in my present position that is the reduced pay I will have to accept or apply at another department as an RN at my present salary. This letter shows a date of the first of next month, less than 2 weeks. What is my legal course of action for this sudden change? When I took this position I was assured verbally that the pay scale would not change.

Unless you have a union agreement or employment contract that gurantees your pay rate, I'm afraid that there really isn't much that you can do. The fact is that as an "at will" worker, your employer can set the conditions of your employment much as it sees fit (absent sone form of legally actionable discrimination). This includes what to pay you and for what job.
