Every state has passed laws to prohibit anyone under the age of 21 from possessing or consuming any alcoholic beverage. These laws are known as "minor in possession" (MIP) laws. If convicted, the person will typically be charged with a lowest degree misdemeanor. As a general rule, a minor will have their driver’s licenses suspended, be fined, and possibly be ordered to participate in an alcohol treatment program. In certain cases, jail time may also be imposed.
