In criminal law, the statute of limitationsis a orescribed period of time beyond which a prosecutor cannot charge someone with a crime that was committed more than a specified number of years ago (depending on the state and the crime involved). The general purpose of SOL's is to make sure convictions occur only upon evidence which has not degraded or been otherwise compromised with time. After the period of the statute has run, no further action can be taken by a prosecutor. That having been said, once legal action is taken against a person, the statue in no longer applicable, even if there has not yet been a conviction. The statute refers to the time in which legal action must be taken.
