What can you do about harassing neighbors?

For the last 3 nights straight they’ve had a party from 8 pm to 6 a. There was yelling and loud noises so I called the cops but they never showed up. Now I’m being threatened by my neighbors and they broke my fence. What can I do?

1) Check the local noise ordinances about noice after 8 o'clock. If there are limitations on noise, parties, etc., the police legally have to respond. If they did not, try contacting police supervisors and inquiring into why the police did not respond, so you know what to do next time.

2) Vandalism is a crime; you can report your neighbors to the police for breaking the fence. You may also report them for harassment. You may be in a position to press charges and/or get a protective order of some kind.

3) Deliberate destruction of someone's property is also a civil "tort"--you can sue your neighbors for the cost of replacement or repair.
