What are the consequences for an 18 year old being tried for petty theft without any prior record?
I was trying on 2 rings and took the tags off so that I could see if the ring size fit properly. I saw the employee look at me while I was taking off the tag, and became nervous because I didn’t want her to think I was stealing it. I began to walk to give her the rings back and saw a sign that said they prosecuted all shoplifters. That really made me nervous, so I put it in the front pocket of my purse so nobody else could see that I took the tags off until I was ready to give her the rings. When I got to her she told me the police were being called and wouldn’t let me explain. How will this effect college and future jobs?

Petty theft is a crime, generaly a misdeameanor. You need to hire an attorney as soon as you can to help. Tell your parents. The screaming in the beginning is worth the end result which will be the support you need to have the charge negotiated down to a violation or maybe even dismissed. If convicted it will indeed follow you and effect your future. Good luck.
