There are two main, significant benefits you would receive by having a conservatorship over your mother: the first is that you would have legal authority to make decisions, both financial and medical, for her benefit without any objection from her or any other family member or friends.

The second benefit is that a conservatorship would be declaring that she is not competent to handle her affairs.  Accordingly, any agreement she makes with any person or any contracts entered would be null and void automatically. People with dementia, unfortunately, are often the subject of unscrupulous sales people and acquaintances and can be easily tricked into an unconscionable and unfair agreement.
