The owner’s of the car that I was driving got stuck with the bill. What do I have to do legally?

If you were at fault (e.g. driving carelessly) in hitting the truck, you (as the out-fault driver) are responsible for any damage or costs you caused to others. If the car's owners want, they could sue you for any and all damage or amounts they had to pay. If they ask you to pay, you can either pay or refuse; if you refuse, they could sue you, at which time you could offer to pay/settle or else try to defend; but if you were at fault, you will most likely lose any lawsuit. Your best bet may be to offer to pay the full amount, if you can afford it, to avoid a lawsuit; or as much as you can afford to pay, if you can't pay it all.
