We did not have any insurance. The freight company is not assuming liability. Is there anything we can do? Cost of damages is 17k.

Assuming the items were fine when placed in possession with the freight company and damaged upon arrival, then the freight company is responsible for the damages under the laws of all states in this country. It appears that the freight company did not properly pack your belongings.
Given what you have written, you need to consult with a consumer law attorney for assistance.
