Federal overtime pay laws require employers to pay "non-exempt" employees overtime for all hours worked over 40 hours in a work week (those who are not eligible for overtime are called "exempt"). The overtime rate is 1 1/2 times the employee's regular rate, except in a few very limited situations. Exceptions exist to overtime pay rules for certain occupations.  Additionally, many states have laws relating to overtime, and if your state's law is broader than federal overtime law, you must follow the state law.
