should I be compensated for time on call as a maintenance man for a motel?

I am working as a motel maintenance man. I do not get 40 hrs a wk, yet am expected to be on call 24/7 for any problems that arise. Is this fair? And what kind of compensation is legally due?

It may not be fair, but it is legal ("fair" and "legal" are NOT the same thing). The law allows you to be on call without *any* extra pay for it: you only have to be paid when a "call" comes in and you are performing work--not when you are waiting to see if or when there will be work.
