Typically under the laws of all states in this country when a person who is receiving alimony from the former spouse gets a part time or full time job, the spouse paying alimony can petition the court for a reduction of the monthly amount paid. The purpose of alimony (spousal support) is to allow the person who is receiving it to get trained, educated and get back into the work force to support himself or herself.
