What to do if my wife died with no Will?

I assumed all her assets (under $1000) and did not go through probate. I recently received a check made out to the estate of her name for settlement of a class action suit in the amount of $176. Can or should I try to cash this check?

Since your wife died without a Will or trust in place and your received a $176.00 check made out to her, I would simply deposit it into one of her accounts and then work with the bank manager for its release to you. Another option is to return the check and ask that it be issued to you.
