My son had a car accident and hit a telephone pole. He is 17. I just got a bill from the power company and they want over $25K for fixing the pole.

Can they make my son pay for the pole? We don’t have that kind of money.

Was the car accident your son's fault? Was there partial responsibility by the power company -- i.e., did they not maintain the pole, did they move it?  Does your son have car insurance? Did he contact the insurance company? I understand perhaps the concern with not calling (higher rates, etc.) but if your son or you cannot afford the $25k, your insurance company should have a provision that allows for such coverage and may also offer free legal counsel to represent your son's interests.  Do some research.  Is it $25k to replace the entire pole? Or is it surface damage?  How fast was he going?
