If my neighbor paid to have my tree cut down, am I responsible for half of the bill?
My neighbors did not like the acorns falling from a tree in my yard and they wanted it cut down. We did not have the money since it is a huge tree, so we told them if they wanted to take care of it that was fine we just wanted the wood. So one day I came home from work and a tree service was taking down my tree, they never contacted us to make sure it was okay and a month later our neighbor came over with an $1100 bill wanting half even though we thought there was an understanding we were not paying for it. Are we liable to pay the half?

No, not if you did not agree to pay half the cost. You gave them permission to take care of it and they went ahead and did so; that agreement (that they could take down the tree if they liked, but leave you the wood) does not obligate you to pay part of the cost of cutting the tree down.
