If my landlord has taken on the neighborhood squirrels as pets and has one of them living in his apartment, is this a health issue?

The landlords family owns the building. The entire complex shares the same washer/dryers.

Whether or not a squirrel taken on as a pet is a health issue depends upon the municipality where you live. Different counties and states have different rules and regulations as to such. My thinking is that such would not be a health issue in that pet stores sell mice and rats as pets.

Squirrels should not be treated any differently assuming the pet is healthy.
