No, he is not required to get COBRA for you: the law does not require a spouse to insure his/her spouse (or even to have insurance for him/herself); there is no legal obligation to make sure that you are insured. Separated or not, he could refuse to get COBRA for the 2 month period, or even to take out insurance from/through his new job at all.
