If my divorce decree stipulates that my ex pay me a $50K settlement within 5 years of the date of the divorce, how do I go about making sure it’s enforced without incurring additional expenses to myself?

Unfortunatelt there is no guarantee as to not having to incur additional expenses as to the $50,000 pay off to you if your "ex" fails to comply with the court order. One way of minimizing the costs would be to have an attorney's fee provision within the decree (amended decree) to give you some leverage that the "ex" will comply with the order and if he or she does not, he or she would have to pay your attorney's fees to get compliance.
