What to do if my 21 year old daughter was charged with shoplifting under $300?

She’s never been in trouble before and is an honor student in college. My husband wants to use a public defender but I don’t know how it works

Get a lawyer immediately-- under $300 may still be over $250, which is a felony in Massachusetts.  If she has not yet been arraigned, she may very well be able to work something out with the store and the police prosecutor before/during the clerk's hearing.
