What to do if my 26 year old son committed suicide and my ex is now demanding that I pay 1/2 of funeral expenses?

I divorced 16 years ago. I was not included on funeral decisions, location or costs but now my ex is demanding that I pay 1/2 the costs. Am I responsible? My son was not married nor did he have any assets.

Legally, you are not responsible for paying any portion of your 26 year old son's funeral expenses that your former spouse is requesting that you pay for. However, from a moral standpoint given the fact that your son has passed and there are no assets of his estate to reimburse those that pay for his funeral expenses, you might consider paying what you can afford.

I suggest that you discuss the situation at greater length with your former spouse and you two do the best you can do given this sad situation.
