must you be an attorney to send legal documents to an inmate in prison?

My nephew is in Trousdale Corrections in Hartsville Tn. I have notorized statements concerning his case. The envelope must have Legal documents stamped on it. How do I go about this?

A nonattorney cannot generate or create legal documents for another person, since only an attorney may represent another. However, a nonattorney can forward legal documents in the form of documents which have been filed with the court. If the notarized statements have been filed in his case, you can forward them and mark the entvelop as "legal documents." If they have not been filed, however, they are not "legal documents" even if notarized.
