Unless you have a guaranteed schedule under the terms of an employment contract or union agreement, then you are an "at will" worker and subject to your company's control. Accordingly, you must work past your shift if required. If you do not, then you can be disciplined up to and including suspension or termination. In fact, you can be disciplined for not staying, or for any reason, or for no reason at all, with or without notice.
