Is it right for my roommate to keep me bound to a month-to-month lease?

I am current on a month-to-month lease with another roommate. However we have some unresolvable differences and I wish to move out. He says that I am responsible for paying the rent until when he decides it is okay to move out. Should he be responsible for finding a replacement if I give him at least 30 days notice? Management refuses to step in and requires that he and I both agree to sign a mutual roommate release agreement in order for me to move out.

The definition of a month to month lease is that any party to the lease may terminate it on 30 days notice. In this instance, your roomate is welcome to stay beyond your leaving, but should not be able to hold you responsible for  the rent after you have given your 30 day notice--which should go, in writing (some way you can prove delivery) to both the landlord and the roommate--of termination of your tenancy. If he stays on, your roomate should be reponsible for the full rent on his own.
