While rather unusual, yes an employer can ask an employee to do this. In fact, since most work relationships are "at will", a company can set the conditions of employment much as it sees fit. That is unless doing so violates the terms of a union agreement/employemnt contractor or are is some way discriminatory. Absent that, in this situation your options are to comply with your employer's request, refuse but risk termination, or quit.
