Is it legal and appropriate to consult a labor lawyer if I think my union is not representing my best interests?

1) It is absolutely legal to consult with an attorney, whether or not you are in a union. Being in a union does not mean you give up your rights, especially if you have reason to think the union is not representing your interests.

2) It is appropriate to consult with an attorney any time you feel your rights or interests are being hurt.

3) If the union is not honoring its own contract, or is taking your money (dues) without using them for the stated purposes, or is not acting in good faith vis-a-vis its members, then yes--there may be grounds to take legal action against the union.
