What are my rights regarding interrupted lunch breaks?

I work 12 hour shifts at a medical facility and am allowed a 30 minute break, off the clock. I am an X-ray tech and many times when I clock out for my 30 minute break, I am called back to do an X-ray before my 30 minute break is completed. Also, I am not allowed to leave the facility for my 30 minute break due to the fact an X-ray may come in, other employees (nurses, medical assistants) are allowed to leave. I was wondering if this is allowed? I am in no way compensated for the fact I cannot leave and while I am allowed to finish the full 30 minutes for my break, I am in no way compensated for the many interruptions in my 30 minute break. Is this allowed?

Although the practice you described is allowed, due to the circumstances, your employer may be required to pay you for all or part of the 30 minutes, pursuant to the minimum wage or overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. For more information regarding your entitlement to be paid for interupted breaks or lunch see the Department of Labor website at www.dol.gov
