Some states have laws that automatically revoke beneficiary designations to ex-spouses once a divorce is final. However, NC courts have usually held that a beneficiary designation controls even in the case of divorce. In other words, if an ex-spouse is still listed as the beneficiary, then they are legally entitled to collect the proceeds.
