If you have medical insurance and you are paid through the end of the month, can that carrier terminate your policy without notice?

My son had his appendix taken out and an overnight stay at the hospital. We are paid up through the end of this month and we never received any cancellations until today. Are insurance companies required to notify their policy holders they are being terminated? For instance we are paid through this month but as of today we were notified that we have been terminated. We mailed out our last payment on the 3rd, the insrance company cashed our payment of the 10th but then canceled us the same day.
