Whether or not is is illegal for a third party to retrieve a company's discards into a dumpster for personal use depends upon what the policy is with the company disposing the item.

In order to ascertain such, the human resources person should be consulted for written permission by the interested employee to gather the material that is being thrown away by his or her employer.
