I would advise your landlord in wriitng as well as in a telephone call that the septic tank is overflowing and is creating a health issue. In the note request immediate repair. Keep a copy of the letter for future use and need. If the landlord is not responsive to your request, contact your local health department for an inspection. If the landlord is cited, he or she will be required to immediately make repairs.
One option is for you to pay for the repairs of the septic tank and debit the costs of such from the following month's rent.
