What is the penalty of making a false police report?

I made a false claim on someone on probation. I called the police and they ended up in jail and are serving time. What would happen to me if I told the truth?

It is apparent from your writing this question that you are feeling some remorse about what happened and you wish to make things right, correct?  That is admirable and you should proceed with that path even in light of my letting you know that it can be a very serious penalty for filing a false police report.  It can be a felony charge in Texas.  So what should you do now?  Consult with an attorney and see if there is any way that he or she can "buffer" the situation for you. Let's be clear: it was not the right thing to do but sometimes people do not think that their actions will result in such harshness and their "reasons" behind the actions see justified at the time.  Seek help. Good luck.
