If I handed in my resignation but was then terminated, can I collect unemployment?

I told them that I was leaving in 2 weeks and they then told me that day was my last.

The fact si that giving notice is a courtesy but not a legal requirement (although it may be required under the terms of an employment contract or union agreement). Accordingly, once you handed it in your employer, they could consider it to be your immediate resignation. And voluntarily leaving a job makes a person ineligible to collect unemployment benefits. The only protection here would be if your treatment violated the terms of any employment contract/union agreement that you may have had.
