Is it legal if I was rejected from renting an apartment because I’m a full-time student?

I applied to live at an apartment with one other person. We are both fulltime college students who work part time. Before they knew about us being college students they were completely ready to rent to us. Finance-wise and credit-wise we are both fine. Is this legal? I’m going to be requesting they give us an official letter of rejection stating the reasons why.

Landlords (or anyone else for that matter) are not allowed to discriminate against someone who is in a "legally protected class". That is, against a person due to their race, religion, age (over 40), disability, national origin, etc. However, student status is not such a protected class, therefore landlords are able to deny rental housing to them.
