If I’m a first-time offender, what should I expect for a possession of marijuana charge?

I was in the canyon with a few friends smoking marijuana when a cop pulled up. The cop asked if I had any and i was honest and said that I took a hit. I was given a citaion and charged with possession. I set up my arrainment for the 6th of next month. I’ve never had any history with this (not even had a speeding ticket). I don’t know what to do. I was wondering what to plea or what to expect? I’m left in the dark and am confused and need some advice to guide me or ease my nerves. Is there anyway that this can blow over quickly and not have it on my record? I was thinking about asking for a public defender.

if you've never received one before, you are likely eligible for a marijuana ACD under CPL 170.56.  If granted by the judge, (the DA does not need to consent) the charges can be dismissed and sealed if you stay out of trouble for one year.
