Can I be fired for no reason?

I was fired from my job that I had been with for 18 years; they even stated that I wasn’t doing my job to their standards. If that’s the case why did they wait 19 years to fire me? I also had 260 hours PTO and 563 hours in ESB but did not get paid for any of that. Is this legal? I just feel this was so unfair after 19 years

Unfortunately, fairness and legal are two very different issues. If you did not have a written employment contract limiting the reasons for firing or process by which you could be fired, you could be fired at any time, for any reason whatsoever or no reason at all. (Without a contract, you are an "employee at will.") And unless you had a written employment contract guarantying you payment for our PTO and ESB when your employment ended, the employer does not need to pay you for this.
