If my ex-husband did not name a new beneficiary, will I be entitled to receive the proceeds of his life insurance policy?

I was divorced last year. My ex-husband passed away a few months ago. I just received a letter regarding his life insurance. It said they are reviewing my claim and since this is a divorce state, they will notify me of their decision. I assume his former employer filed the claim on my behalf.

It depends on how you were named as beneficiary. If named simply by your name, then you would still be the beneficiary unless your ex-husband had changed the beneficiary. If you had been identified as "my wife," or "my wife, Jane Doe," then you would not be the beneficiary, since once the divorce is final, you are no longer his wife.
