If you turned in yoru keys and vacated the unit for living purposes but ended up painting the unit as a condition of leaving for the former landlord, from what you have written it does not seem that you should be responsible for paying a half month's worth of rent if you did not reside in the unit.
I recommend that you consult with your former landlord about this issue and if he or she will not agree that you owe nothing more for rent, your option is to either pay the amount of let the landlord sue you in small claims court and defend yourself.
