I owe for $5,966.46. Can I file for bankruptcy now?

If you have not filed for banckruptcy protection yet or if you have but have not yet received a discharge as to your filing, you should be able to add the $5,966.46 amount that you have written about stated in a letter received recently from a lawyer's office concerning a credit card debt. Most likely you can file for bankruptcy protection. I suggest that you consult with a bankruptcy attorney about the matter you are writing about to see about your options.
