This left me with no coverage. Is this legal?

In most situations, your employer must offer you COBRA and if it doesn't, it could be in a whole lot of trouble with the state labor board and insurance commission. I would contact the insurance company, and find out if COBRA should have been offered in your situation and if so, then I would move forward with filing the proper claims and even considering suing your former employer for the medical out of pocket costs.
