If I recently got notice that I am being sued concerning an auto accident that my minor son was at fault for, do I need to contact an attorney?
The accident happened 3 years ago. Does the suing party have to go through us to get money from insurance company?

Yes, the suing party has to sue you, not your son's insurance company. You should contact your insurance company immediately. They will provide your son with a defense and with an attorney. Most likely the victim has a personal injury attorney who has been negotiating with your insurance but was unable to reach resolution and the statute of limitations was about to expire, so the lawyer filed the lawsuit. Turn it over to your insurance company.
